Winter Break Writing

My goal is to finish this novel that I’ve been working on for FIVE DAMN YEARS!!! I got the germ of an idea in May 2011. Started writing the novel a year later. I WILL finish it and begin looking for an agent. Because I’m ready to write something else.

Gender-Neutral Pronouns...

I have been working hard to use them this week, because of my gender-fluid students. It’s a challenge, but it’s worth it to see how much it means to these kiddos.

I wish I could write a novel...

….I dyed my hair blue. Then I kept dying it blue. Bright blue; dark blue; purple-blue. My bathroom has permanent blue ink stains. My dog is growing out a bit of blue dye that dripped on his forehead. I have t-shirts with permanent blue stains around the neckline.

So now, as we enter 2016 and I embark on the second half of my 40th year on Earth…I’m thinking it might be time grow up a bit.

In 2016 I’m gonna dye my hair more of a violet-red. Yeah. That feels more mature.

My dog is disappointed...

…in the amount of writing I have done today. He doesn’t understand procrastination. (But he recognizes laziness when he sees it).

After today, we both have a pretty good understanding of Top Chef…

Blogging: I'm Bad at it

Posted by Blakely Lord on Sunday, December 27, 2015, In : Writing Craft

From time to time I try this blogging thing and ... I'm terrible at it. I think there are a few reasons for this:
1) I don't know who my audience is. Probably no one, because I never publicize this blog. On top of that, I don't think I have anything to contribute that isn't already out there (probably on a more popular/well-known/widely read blog). The whole exercise feels pointless and aimless and useless. Ugh.
2) Blogging feels like a waste of time. I've never been much ...

Join a Writers' Group

Posted by Blakely Lord on Friday, January 2, 2015, In : Writing Craft

Reasons to join a writing critique group:
1) It motivates you to write.
2) It encourages you to revise.
3) It teaches you to read critically.
4) It trains you to give - and receive - constructive criticism.
5) It helps you hone your craft. It really, really does.

But all writing groups are not created equal. Look for a group that meets most (or all) of these criteria:
1) The group is small. 5 or 6 writers is ideal. 7 or 8 is do-able. 9 or 10 is pushing it. Anything lar...

Writing is hard!

Posted by Blakely Lord on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, In : Writing Craft
I really thought I'd have another book for sale by now. But for some reason getting that first draft written is a slow, painful process. I watch my friends do NaNoWriMo and I am so jealous I could spit.

But then I think Wait a second! I could do that, too, if I wanted to!

And then I'm just mad at myself.

So lately I have been thinking about what makes it so hard for me to write. And I have come to the realization that I spend a lot of time looking for perfection.

And then I found this.

I really li...

Exciting Exciting Exciting!!!

Posted by Blakely Lord on Monday, November 26, 2012, In : Writing Craft

I can't say too much about it, yet, but within the next couple of weeks, there will be another book by me for sale!!!

<we pause for cheers and the popping of champagne corks>

This is a little different from my last book. For starters, it's not a solo project. It's a collaborative anthology, including a story from me as well as stories from 4 of my good friends. All 5 stories are set in the same post-apocalyptic world, and we share some of the same characters. It's got romance and adventure...

Dog Musings

Posted by Blakely Lord on Monday, May 9, 2011, In : Writing Craft
My roommate got a dog. Her name is Gypsy, and she is a super-sweet, 7 year old Golden Retriever. I know she belongs to my roommate ... and I know my roommate is moving to her new house in less than a month...and I know I'm leaving for summer camp in June...

But I LOVE this dog. We hang out all day. She mostly just lies around, while I work. She is sweet and loving and if I get up and move around, she follows me.

When I was a kid, I always had a dog - well, my parents always had a dog - and as ...
